Introduction to QGIS Course

Training Item Code: Introduction to QGIS Course

Training Agenda

The training agenda is based mainly on the QGIS Training Manual with custom examples and has the following aims:

  1. assisting with migration from another GIS package
  2. an introduction to and a better understanding of GIS concepts
  3. an overview and practical experience of the core components of QGIS

The last session each day can be used to answer questions on particular issues that have been encountered during the course of the day.

Topics for the day

Course Introduction

  • Brief description of Open Source GIS and an Introduction to QGIS
  • Preparing data for use in the training. This is mainly to show people how data can be acquired for their local area of interest

Module: The Interface

  • Understanding the whole QGIS interface and a description of the tools
    1. Adding vector layers
    2. Interaction between vector layer and QGIS interface

Module: Creating a Basic Map

  • Adding layers in QGIS and understanding vector Symbology
    1. Adding your vector layers from various sources into QGIS
    2. Understanding vector symbology
      • Different types of styling. Single symbols versus Categorised and Graduated symbols
      • Other remaining types of symbology

Module: Classifying Vector Data

  • Understanding attribute data.
  • Labelling data.
  • Vector classification.

Topics for the day

Module: Creating Maps

  • Using map composer, each participant should be equipped to produce a detailed map of the study area at the end of the course to ensure that they have understood the concepts covered by the manual

Module: Creating Vector Data

  • Creating new datasets. Various formats that QGIS works with will be explored.
    1. Modifying existing vector data.
    2. Digitising and cleaning up vector data.

Module: Vector Analysis

  • Reprojecting and transforming data
  • Case study: This ensures various techniques and methods of vector analysis are used to solve a real-life problem
  • Network analysis and spatial statistics

Module: Raster Analysis of how QGIS deals with raster data and operations that can be carried on raster data

  • Working with rasters in QGIS.
    1. Raster Symbology
      • Raster terrain analysis

Topics for the day

Module: Completing the Analysis

  • This section explains how vector and raster analysis can be combined to produce the final results
    1. They are supplementary exercises that are listed under this section that help the user understand analysis in QGIS

Module: Plugins

  • This section enables users to interact with plugins that extend the core functionality of QGIS
  • How to install and activate plugins
  • Exploring the most downloaded plugins

Module: Online Resources

  • A demonstration of how QGIS interacts with web mapping services

Module: GRASS

  • Explanation of other tools that are accessible within QGIS for advanced analysis
    1. Set-up GRASS
    2. Use of GRASS powerful analytical functions

Module: Database Concepts with PostgreSQL

Module: Spatial Database Concepts with PostGIS

  • A demonstration of how to connect to spatial databases. If participants have other databases that they use, then participants can be shown how to connect and interact with their data in QGIS.

Close of Day: Work on a map and produce a good, impressive map

Question and answers

  • Answering questions based on learning outcomes to last three days
  • Answering questions and exploring participants data
  • Closing session
